A video released by ERT shows the moment a passenger train collides head-on with a commercial train.
It is noted that two trains moved along the same track. In particular, a passenger train bound for Thessaloniki collided head-on with a commercial train heading in the opposite direction.
The two trains, under unknown circumstances, were traveling on the same track, resulting in a violent collision.
The causes of the accident are being investigated, and the head of the Larisa station reportedly admitted his fatal mistake by apologizing at the preliminary investigation stage for the tragic incident.
It is noted that the death toll has reached 43 people, Rubini Leontari, head of the forensic service of Larisa, told ERT. A total of 85 people were injured, of which 72 were hospitalized – six in intensive care units.
According to authorities, the number of victims will increase, as several people were blocked in the first carriages of a passenger train. According to an update from Hellenic Train, the two trains carried a total of 354 people (342 passengers and 12 employees, two of them on a commercial train).
