Polakis: Flurry of reactions to scandalous post

The publication of Pavlos Polakis with appeals from journalists, judges and other public figures, as well as his position on the mass dismissals of bailiffs, caused a sharp reaction and general condemnation in the judicial and legal world. Judicial associations immediately responded with strong statements, most notably the Association of Judges and Prosecutors, whose members Mr. Polakis included in his post, mostly senior judges, who tried and unanimously convicted former Minister Nikos Pappa in the television license case.

Among them, however, he included others who are involved in an ongoing trial – the decision is expected to be announced on Saturday, March 4 – with former minister Dimitris Papagelopoulos indicted in the Special Court, a fact that has been taken by the chief judges as a direct attempt intimidate them in connection with this decision of the Special Court.

The Union of Judges and Prosecutors, regarding the post of Polakis, spoke of a “democratic bias” and “the need for an immediate restoration of constitutional legitimacy”, while stating that “the images of awarded persons”, journalists, judges, etc., are shocking.

The Union of Judges announced a “democratic bias” – an investigation commissioned by the prosecutor’s office is “underway.”

In the same vein, the Judicial Associations of the Council of State and the Court of Accounts (supreme courts) acted, as well as the Bar of Athens, with the position of its president, Dimitris Vervesos, who spoke of “political positioning beyond the constitutional framework.” “. At the same time, the Prosecutor’s Office of Athens immediately and ex officio decided to conduct an investigation. It is reported that the prosecutor’s investigation, carried out by the head of criminal prosecution in Athens, Angelica Triantafillou, is “going” to be sent to Parliament before it closes due to the upcoming parliamentary elections, so that immunity can be lifted from a person under investigation, a member of parliament, so that the Court can continue its work, because the intervention of the prosecutor, which was made by order of the head of the prosecutor’s office, Antonis Eleftherianu, is aimed at documenting particularly immoral crimes, such as inciting citizens to commit crimes or violence against judges.

If the materials of the case on the removal of Polakis reach parliament in the coming days, sources in the prosecutor’s office suggest that his immunity can be lifted before the closing of parliament. If this happens, then the subsequent criminal proceedings will soon bring Pavlos Polakis face to face with the prosecutor’s office.

However, Polakis’ message, still fresh after the verdict of 13 supreme judges on the unanimously convicted former minister Nikos Pappa, provoked a strong reaction, not only because it indicated the names of the supreme judges, including those who are still on trial in the trial of former minister Dimitris Papagelopoulos , but also for direct threats of massive layoffs, as he wrote, of all judges over 60 years of age and their replacement with others who will be hired – if SYRIZA wins the elections – 500 every year.

Of course, this is not the first time that Pavlos Polakis, through posts and public statements, threatens judicial officials or overly criticizes their decisions, but for the first time he speaks of mass dismissals of judges and mentions by name the chief judges who were part of the special courts, which caused a storm of reaction in judicial system.
