The head-on collision of two trains (one commercial and one passenger) in Tempe (eastern Greece, between Athens and Thessaloniki) occurred on the night from Tuesday to Wednesday. So far, the bodies of 29 people have been removed from the carriages, but the number of victims is preliminary. The number of victims is 85, of which 25 are in serious condition. Children are among the victims.

Dozens of injured, many of them in serious condition, were rescued by rescuers and transported by ambulances to the nearest hospitals.

According to information provided by the fire service, 194 passengers were taken to Thessaloniki and another 5 passengers were taken to a hospital in Katerina, of which 3 are in good condition and two with minor injuries remain for hospitalization.

About the tragic accident, the railway operator Hellenic Train reports in a statement: “At Evangelismos station, there was a head-on collision between two trains: a freight train and train IC 62, which departed from Athens to Thessaloniki. At the time of the collision, there were about 350 passengers on board. Firefighters and company personnel went to the scene, participated in rescue operations and provided assistance to passengers.”

The operation to release the passengers continues and takes place in difficult conditions.

40 firefighters and 30 ambulances, as well as police crews, are on the scene.

The Papanikolaou and Hennimata hospitals in Thessaloniki, which have a special ward for burn patients, were also put on alert, as was the case in Attica.

In addition, military units in Thessaly introduced the alarm protocol.

The mayor of Larissa, Apostolos Kalogiannis, emphasized that hospitals in the area were opened as an emergency. .
