Sweden’s largest nuclear reactor will be shut down for eight days due to damaged fuel rod, Dagens Nyheter (DN) newspaper reported today.
Reactor 3 of the Oskarshamn nuclear power plant in the southeast of the country will be disconnected from the national grid on March 3. Another of Sweden’s six nuclear reactors has failed due to repairs.
“Unfortunately, it is necessary to solve the problem of wear of fuel rods. It can’t wait,” Desiree Lilieval, communications manager at management company OKG, told DN.
Last December, when the same nuclear reactor was shut down for nine days due to a technical problem, electricity costs for consumers have increased.
“If it’s cold, we’ll have to rely on imports,” said Eric Ek of national transmission operator Svenska Kraftnat, referring to the impact the planned outage could have.
Nearly 30% of electricity produced in Sweden comes from nuclear reactors. Between 2017 and 2020, four reactors were decommissioned, and today six reactors remain in operation at three nuclear power plants.
