Foreign Secretary Anthony Blinken warned the UN Security Council not to be fooled by calls for a temporary or unconditional ceasefire in Ukraine, stating:fair and strong» The world cannot allow Russia to rest and rearm.

Security Council meets to celebrate its first anniversary Russian invasion of Ukraine. On the same day last year, a group of 15 members gathered in New York amid fears in the West that Moscow was planning such a move.

Blinken’s warning to the Soviet came a few hours after China today presented a 12-point ceasefire plan in Ukraine.

“Any peace that legitimizes Russian land grabs by force will weaken the (UN) Charter and send a signal to would-be aggressors everywhere that they can invade countries and get away with it,” the US Secretary of State stressed.

General Assembly UN On Thursday, Russia was overwhelmingly singled out of 193 member states, calling for a “comprehensive, just and lasting peace” in accordance with the UN Charter and again calling on Moscow to withdraw its troops and cease hostilities.

“No member of this Council should ask for peace by supporting Russia’s war against Ukraine and the UN Charter,” said Blinken, who accused China of considering arms supplies to Russia and warned Beijing against such moves.

Since the Russian invasion, Western powers have provided Ukraine with billions of dollars worth of weapons. China told the General Assembly yesterday that “supplying weapons will not bring peace” to Ukraine.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba told the Security Council that any new peace proposals must be consistent with the requirements of the General Assembly.

The Security Council has held dozens of meetings on Ukraine over the past year but has been unable to take any meaningful action because Russia has veto power.
