A photo taken from the cockpit of the plane on February 3 – the day before it was shot down – shows the hot air balloon with visible panels underneath.
Recall that within nine days, from February 4 to February 12, the US armed forces shot down four flying objects, three of them over the United States and one over Canada.
The most high-profile case of the four was the February 4 downing of a Chinese balloon over the Atlantic near South Carolina.
Beijing claims it was a weather balloon that mistakenly entered US airspace.
The American side, on the contrary, complains that the balloon was a spy balloon and, therefore, posed a threat to US national security and that is why it was shot down.
