The Korean manufacturer has just recalled more than 70,000 units Kia Sportage of the second generation : quite an old model, as the relevant units were produced between 2007 and 2009.

However, the problem seems critical because these models suffer froman electronic failure that could lead to a fire, both while driving and on the spot. Therefore, the safety of users of the Korean SUV is at stake, so Kia takes this issue very seriously.

Kia Sportage II: important recall campaign

A reminder that carries reference SC253, published by NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), the United States federal agency responsible for traffic safety. The affected models appear to be only in the US market, and Kia has not issued a similar recall in Europe, at least not yet.

in detail, a fire may occur in the engine compartment, on the hydraulic electronic control unit (HECU), both when the vehicle is parked and in motion.

In general, not less than 71704 approx second generation Kia Sportage suffered: they were produced from August 9, 2007 to May 13, 2009already affected by the previous recall campaign in 2016 under number 16V815.

Kia Sportage II: fire hazard

Users affected by this damage have observed an ABS warning light on the dashboard, a burning smell, or even smoke coming from the engine compartment. To date, about fifteen such incidents have already been listed, which did not lead to accidents or injuries.

The Korean firm has already notified buyers of models affected by the recall by mail, as well as through Kia dealers and service centers. According to the NHTSA report, Kia will reimburse owners of these Sportages for the repair costs already incurred related to this problem.

The Korean firm has not yet found a solution to the problem, but is currently conducting a large-scale investigation for it. Owners will be notified when a repair is available, and in the meantime, Kia urges them to park outdoors and away from other vehicles, buildings or structures until the repair is completed.
