If we look at Gorge County, while the national average home insurance rate is 20%, in Gorge it was 9.1%, so the question is what will happen to the rest of the homeowners who suffered damage,” said Alexandru Choncan, President UNSAR at the Finmedia conference

What else did the head of UNSAR say:

  • Of course, the insurance industry cannot prevent these natural disasters from occurring, particularly earthquakes, but it can certainly help restore and strengthen this economic resilience. We can certainly help people rebuild their lives and homes after such a catastrophic event.
  • Yes, recently there has been an increase in the interest of Romanians in insurance, especially recently in home insurance, but even after the pandemic period, we see an increase in the interest of Romanians in voluntary health insurance, in home insurance and in life insurance.
  • We are one in five insured houses, in a context where the European average is somewhere around 63%, so we have an important potential.
  • Everything works, as you well know, together. Financial industries work together and we need each other. We work very well with the banking industry, the capital market, the leasing industry, and I think that only together we can raise the level of financial education to help people and the economy.
  • When it comes to earthquakes and resilience, I don’t necessarily know how much gross premiums matter in that context, but it’s especially important to support customers by paying claims when needed.
