On Monday, the PSD demanded that the Kyiv authorities restore honest bilateral cooperation and immediately stop the deep dredging of the Bastro Canal. At the same time, PSD President Marcel Čolacu on Monday asked the Romanian authorities to take quick decisions to immediately stop the work on Bastro. Čolaku stated that Romania will appeal to all international, bilateral conventions and all forums for the Danube Delta issue.

“The lies, manipulation and minimization of the problem must stop! The Romanian authorities must take quick decisions so that the work on Bastroe is stopped immediately and the situation is normalized. We will appeal to all international, bilateral conventions and all forums for the sake of the Danube Delta! We will protect the heritage of future generations with all our strength!”, says Marcel Cholaku in a post on his Facebook page.

In a press release, the PSD draws attention to the unprecedented deepening of the channel to 8-10 meters to allow the navigation of large-tonnage vessels, which drastically changes the flow and circulation of water, which has a fatal impact on biodiversity. the Danube Delta.

“Dredging works on the Bastro channel are an environmental disaster! The Ukrainian authorities should return to the dialogue table, restore honest bilateral cooperation and immediately stop the deep dredging of the Bastro Canal. (…) The PSD has officially appealed to the European Commission through the member of the European Parliament Victor Negrescu with a request to issue a decision regarding the unilateral actions of Ukraine, which ignore international conventions and agreements to which it is a party,” PSD said in a statement.

PSD’s reaction comes in the context of Ukraine’s Ministry of Infrastructure announcing on Monday that the depth of the Bastro Canal had increased from 3.9 to 6.5 meters, a “great opportunity for the river power of the Danube”, although the Ukrainian Embassy in Bucharest claimed that it is only about waterway maintenance works.
