Queen Margrethe II of Denmark has met dozens of leaders from around the world in the 51 years since she became sovereign, but she says she will never forget her meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, reports dpa, citing Agerpres.
The Queen, now 82, met Putin during a state visit to Russia in 2011 and again in 2014 to mark the 70th anniversary of the Allied landings in Normandy during World War II.
In an interview with the Danish weekly Weekendavisen, published on Friday, Margaret II admits that she found Putin an unpleasant person and that she was particularly struck by a certain trait in him.
“I have never seen such cold eyes in my life,” said the queen.
The Danish sovereign also told the same publication that she closely follows the news about Ukraine and that she was impressed by the resilience of Ukrainians.
The Queen of Denmark welcomes the shipment of Leopard tanks to Ukraine
Margarita II called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky “the right person at the right time” and welcomed Europe’s response, including the delivery of Leopard battle tanks to Kyiv.
“Putin thought he could break all of Europe, but he forced us to stand in solidarity,” the queen said.
However, the Danish government announced this week that it will not participate in the coalition to send Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, but will, together with the Netherlands, finance the modernization of Leopard 1 combat vehicles that are in military storage in Germany.
Germany announced at the beginning of February that it would also send such basic combat vehicles to Ukraine, but did not specify their number.
