Syrian President Bashar al-Assad acknowledged that the impact of last week’s deadly earthquakes has required more resources than the Syrian government has at its disposal and thanked the governments that have extended a helping hand to his country.
It was Assad’s first televised appearance since last Monday’s earthquakes that killed more than 42,000 people in Turkey and Syria.
According to the Syrian government, 1,414 people have died in areas under its control. More than 4,000 deaths are reported in areas controlled by anti-regime forces.
The UN has requested $400 million to meet the needs of the victims of the earthquake in Syria over the next three months.
However, because of the earthquake, Assad appeared to be somewhat out of the international isolation he had been trapped in after 11 years of civil war. Many Arab states have sent humanitarian aid to Syria, including Saudi Arabia, which has funded anti-regime forces in Syria.
