The European Union has released details of the tenth package of sanctions against Russia, which will target industrial goods and technology, CNN reports.
The bloc will impose an export ban on Russia worth $11.8 billion (€11 billion) to “deprive the Russian economy of critical technologies and industrial goods,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Wednesday in a statement recorded from Strasbourg. France.
“To achieve maximum impact, we are targeting many industrial goods that Russia needs and cannot obtain through third-country dumping — vital goods such as electronics, specialized vehicles, auto parts, truck parts and aircraft engines — said von der Leyen.
The block will also target goods in the construction sector “that could be targeted by the Russian military,” she said. The EU will also establish “control over 47 electronic components that can be used in Russian weapons systems.”
The EU should coordinate with member states to conduct a review of Russian central bank assets held in the bloc, which von der Leyen called “crucial” given that Russian state assets could be used to finance reconstruction in Ukraine.
The EU’s chief diplomat, Josep Borrell, outlined the EU’s intentions to add about 100 organizations and influential persons to the sanctions list for “their role in undermining the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.”
“This includes those responsible for military activities, political decisions, propaganda and disinformation. We are pursuing those who are involved in the kidnapping, deportation and forced adoption of Ukrainian children in Russia, as well as those who contribute to the looting of Ukrainian resources,” Borrell said.
The bloc also decided to impose sanctions on Iranian organizations related to the supply of Iranian-made drones to Russia.
In his closing speech, Borrell emphasized the EU’s commitment to continue increasing pressure on Russia.
Von der Leyen also called on the bloc’s 27 member states to quickly approve the proposed package as part of efforts to pass it by February 24, the anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
