The Golf remains a Volkswagen icon, the first car that comes to mind when the company from Wolfsburg is mentioned. Now the manufacturer is busy deployment of a new range of electric vehicles pioneered by ID.3. Many saw her as the heiress of the famous Golf.
If the ID range is characterized by numbers, this nomenclature should be quickly discontinued. Volkswagen must return to its basics and, in particular, not to draw a line under the past and already established name, that in Golf. Especially since we cannot say that the launch of ID.3 really lived up to the expectations placed on it.
From Volkswagen ID.2 to ID.Golf?
According to our colleagues at Autocar, the new Golf will appear in 2025 and will take the legacy of the ID.Life concept crossover presented at the Munich Motor Show in 2021. The prototype received an ambiguous perception of the public, which was His very cubic forms never convinced. A setback for Volkswagen, this was a concept that was supposed to be the forerunner of the ID.2.
Thus, Volkswagen would change its design and return with more classic lines, while integrating into the C segment. However, the goal would be the same: to produce an electric car worth about 25,000 euros by 2025.
For this, Volkswagen is counting on the success and image of the Golf brand. So, the Volkswagen ID.Golf could see the light of day, according to several inside sources at the company, who detailed some meetings with Thomas Schaefer, the brand’s boss. Thomas Schaefer, who, when he headed the Chinese branch of Volkswagen, already emphasized the importance of the Golf name: “People immediately understand what we are talking about”.
Start with new bases
Several sources cited by Autocar also confirmed that the potential ID.Golf or ID.2 will be the first Volkswagen to ride on the MEB+ platform, an updated version of the current platform used by all models in the ID family. New features are expected to include new LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery cells and charging power of up to 200 kW. On the other hand, there doesn’t seem to be an 800-volt architecture in the program.
But what will Volkswagen’s new electric compact car look like? Rumors concern a model halfway between the Polo and the current Golf, about 4.25 meters long. These dimensions are very close to the ID.3 dimensions.
What will differentiate them is the styling, thanks in particular to the work of new designer Andreas Mindt: the new Golf may thus have a relatively short bonnet and, according to those interviewed by Autocar, will have quite close connections in terms of aesthetics with the fourth generation Golf.
The new Golf will be entitled to a front-mounted electric motor providing traction, while higher-end versions will be able to have two axle-mounted motors. The car should weigh between 1,600 and 1,700 kg, and the GTX abbreviation should be gone by now. in favor of the GTI labelmore symbolically.
The first look at Volkswagen’s new electric compact car could come in concept form at the Wörthersee GTI in May in Austria or in September at the ID Treffen in Locarno, Switzerland.
