Long term agreement electricity market (PRA) for green energy to be produced by the portfolio wind projects with a total capacity of 78 MW were signed Mytilene With EDPR. This is the first PPA of the Portuguese EDPR in Greece and also the first of the Mytilineos regarding the energy produced by wind projects.
The agreement allows EDP Renewables to accelerate the development of a specified portfolio of three wind farms, two in Viotia (23 and 35 MW) and one in Achaia (21 MW). All three wind farms are expected to be operational by the end of 2024-2025, and according to the PPA signed by the two companies, they should produce 232 GWh per year, equivalent to the consumption of 60,000 households in Greece, and reduce approximately 100,000 tonnes CO2 emissions per year.
This is the first long-term green energy purchase (GPP) deal of a Portuguese company in Greece.
Mytilineos fully supports Greece’s strategic plan for decarbonization and is looking for opportunities to provide green PPAs to its portfolio in order to reduce energy costs for both its own needs and those of its business partners. As part of its broader strategy, this transaction takes the first step in developing a green supply portfolio of more than 2 GW by combining either green PPAs with third parties or own assets in the wider South East Mediterranean region.
With this new portfolio, EDPR now has 11.2 GW of the 20 GW installed in its 2021-2025 business plan. This deal allows EDPR to reach more than 3.6 GW from the European target of 6.7 GW in the period 2021-2025. The Portuguese company EDPR entered Greece in 2018 by acquiring the Livadi wind farm, a 45MW ready project located near the town of Malezina in Central Greece. The Livadi wind farm began operation in 2021 and since then the generated energy has been enough to power more than 23,500 households, while reducing CO2 emissions by about 56,000 tons per year.
“Mytilineos is committed to enriching its portfolio with competitively priced renewable energy as it matures into an internationally integrated energy company,” said Ioannis Kalafatas, Chief Executive Officer of Mytilineos Energy Sector. Dionysios Andronas, general manager of the company, called the agreement with Mytilineos an important milestone in EDPR’s activities in Greece. “We are delighted to be working with a company like Mytilineos and will continue to look for new opportunities to promote renewable energy in Greece and provide solutions to facilitate the energy transition,” he stressed.
