Trial for the murder of Alkis Campanos – “They wanted to cause damage,” a police witness testified.

The intervention of its president Mixed Jury Trial in Thessaloniki, where Alkis Campanos’ murder trial is taking place, sparked tension between the civil suit and defense lawyers during today’s 8th day of hearings. “These expressions are indecent, you are not honoring anyone,” the chairman of the court addressed them in a harsh tone, urging them to return to the classroom.

There was another round of face-to-face confrontation between the lawyers with personal characteristics about the questions and judgments they formulated during the interrogation of the police witness. In fact, the court had to pause for a while to calm the mood, and the relatives of the 19-year-old deceased shouted indignantly from the audience seats “respect the memory of Alkis and their parents.”

The police witness finished his testimony

Today’s session began and ended with the testimony of a police witness from the Department of Crimes Against Life of Thessaloniki, whose interrogation was a marathon, as he acted as a witness for the 3rd day. Answering dozens of frequently repeated questions from defense lawyers, the witness was asked to clarify, on the basis of evidence (CCTV cameras, testimonies, genetic material, etc.), the positions and movements of the 12 defendants in relation to the 66 seconds that the murderous episode lasted.

Assessing the video recordings available in the case, which, however, do not capture the full extent of the attack, he removed some of the defendants from the “frame” in relation to the place where the murder took place, although he added that from this material “it is impossible to prove who, how much and with what hit Alkis and two of his friends.”

“They wanted to hit the Martians”

He reiterated that the aim of the defendants was “to attack any follower of Mars” as long as they were outnumbered. Regarding the blows received by 19-year-old Alkis and the cause of death (the coincidence of damage to the femoral artery and injuries to the head, according to the forensic examination), he said that even if it were not for the leg injury, “I don’t think he had the opportunity to survive “. “They wanted to cause damage, and the damage is great,” the same witness said elsewhere in his testimony, commenting on the method of attack and the weapons used.

Protection request

In the meantime, the defenders filed a motion to call and testify as witnesses of the Thessaloniki Subdivision for Combating Sports Violence police officers who arrived at the scene of the crime before the arrival of their colleagues from Crimes Against Life. The Court has reserved an answer as to whether the motion is granted and will decide on it in the course of the proceedings and if deemed necessary.

Continuation on Thursday

The trial will continue on Thursday, when the next witness will be questioned. This is the driver of the car, which was not far from the crime scene. A particular witness drove past the scene and his car was found behind the parked cars of 12 defendants.
