During today’s process to confirm the arrest of Italian MEP Andrea Coccolino, his lawyers have asked the Italian judiciary not to give the green light to their client’s extradition to Belgium and to release him from prison.
Coccolino’s lawyers argued that there was no risk of the politician being expelled from Italy, that there was no serious evidence, and at the same time stressed that the MEP repeatedly asked to testify before the Belgian prosecutor’s office, but received no answer.
“I am calm, I am confident in the work of justice,” Andrea Coccolino told his lawyers from the Poggioreale prison in Naples, where he was transferred last night. An Italian center-left MEP was arrested yesterday after Belgian prosecutors issued a European arrest warrant on charges of corruption, criminal organization and money laundering in the context of the Cattargate case.
