Last year, 10.8 million cars were produced in the EU, more than 3 million fewer than in 2019, which preceded the pandemic. Romania finished in sixth place, ahead of Italy and Hungary, our country is the only one in the top 10 where production increased compared to 2019. Considering that the production in Russia was reduced by 67%, Romania exceeded the number of cars produced, shows ACEA data.

In 2019, 14.1 million cars were produced in the EU, 10 million in 2021, and 10.76 million last year. According to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), the largest producer country is Germany (3.33 million units), followed by Spain (1.7 million) and the Czech Republic (1.19 million vehicles).

Slovakia was in fourth place with almost 970,000 cars, France in fifth place, and Romania in sixth place with a record 507,000 cars. Italy and Hungary passed 400,000 vehicles, while Sweden and Belgium rounded out the top ten, each with around 250,000 units.

In 2019, Romania was in eighth place, but since then production in Italy and Hungary has fallen by around 20%. In nine of the top ten countries, production decreased compared to 2019, with the exception of Romania, which saw an increase, mainly thanks to the Ford plant, which in 2022 reached record volumes.

Compared to 2019, the largest declines in production in 2022 were seen in Germany, over 1.1 million units – and France, over 650,000 units. Under these conditions, France was ahead of Slovakia, although in 2019 Hexagon had more than half a million vehicles across the country with its capital in Bratislava.

What does car production look like in other major European countries? In Russia, total production was 437,000 units, up from 1.34 million in 2021. Not surprising, given the consequences of the war that Russia started. There was little car production in Ukraine, the total number fell from 7,300 to 1,500 cars.

Car production in the United Kingdom fell last year by 10% compared to 2021 to 764,000 cars, while Turkey increased production to 791,000 cars.
