His progress continues weather vane “Barbara”with the regions of Attica, Evia, Boeotia, Phthiotis and Magnesia in the centre.
In particular, transitional snow falls which occur from the morning hours of Tuesday, according to the forecast data of the National Observatory of Athens / Meteo.grfrom Tuesday evening and especially from Wednesday midnight will intensify in the lowlands of Magnesia, eastern Central Greece (Phthiotis, Boeotia and Attica), Evia and the northeastern Peloponnese, giving new snow heights in these regions.
The map below shows the new estimated snow depth in Attica, Evia and the rest of the eastern mainland, as well as part of the northeastern Peloponnese, calculated using the National Observatory of Athens/Meteo.gr Numerical Weather Prediction model for two days Tuesday and Wednesday . It should be noted that new snow depth estimates will be added in areas where there is already snow.
Analytically:
– In some low-lying areas of Attica, new snow depths are estimated to be up to 10 cm, and snow depths of up to 20-30 cm are expected at higher altitudes. In the Attica Basin, snow is expected mainly in the northernmost parts, but less than 5 cm of snow is estimated to fall. The possibility of limited snowfall also exists in the southeastern parts of the county.
– In Northern Evia and Magnesia, where the highest snow heights are expected, mainly in mountainous and semi-mountainous areas, up to 20-40 centimeters of snow can be seen, while snowfalls are expected in areas with lower heights.
– In the rest of eastern Sterea, the heaviest snowfalls are expected in parts of Boeotia, where up to 20-30 cm of snow will be recorded in the lowlands, and 10-20 cm of snow is expected in the easternmost parts of Phthiotis. The most significant snow heights are expected mainly in mountainous and semi-mountainous areas.
“The snow has reached the sea”
It is noted that the regions of Evia, Boeotia, Phthiotis and Magnesia have been in the center of the “Barbara” bad weather since this morning, gradually leaving the Attica basin.
Speaking to K, meteorologist and director of research at the National Observatory of Athens, Konstantinos Lagouvardos, emphasizes that the phenomena in the above areas have already been observed since Sunday, but now we are in their very intense phase, which will last another 48 hours and probably also on Thursday .
The heavy snowfall prevailing in all the above areas is evidenced by the fact that in the port and on the central beach of Volos today the snow has reached 20 cm, and in Pelion since yesterday morning a snowstorm.
Panagiotis Koutsaftis, mayor of Zagora Mouresi, says that “the snow has reached the sea, while in nine villages of our municipality it reaches even one meter.” Of course, he is quick to add: “We wanted so much snow and we want it to continue even more. Until now, we have hardly had them, and we were very worried. We need it first of all, so that there is water in the summer.”
Snowplows in Viotia work non-stop
“In the city of Thebes, the snow has exceeded one meter,” said in turn the mayor of the region, Giorgos Anastasiou “K”, who notes that it has been snowing in Viotia since last Sunday with short breaks. noon and the atmosphere is reminiscent of the times … self-isolation.
G. Anastasiou reports that until yesterday there were short-term power outages, but today the problem seems to have been resolved.
“The modernization of part of the network, carried out by DEDDIE in the past, seems to have borne fruit, because this time there are really few problems with electricity,” he tells K. As for snow plows, they work around the clock. “They don’t have time to get across the road and they repave it within minutes,” he concludes.
On Evia, the picture is more complicated.
More problems on Evia, where the weather has been raging at a steady pace for three days now. The problems are mainly located in the north and mainly in the central part of Evia.
In fact, the mountain villages of the municipality of Dirfion-Messapia have been facing problems with electricity since yesterday, as the snow exceeded one meter. “Today, we are gradually giving them electricity with a generator, at least until DADDI completely solves the problem,” district mayor Giorgos Psatas tells K, who emphasizes that there are a lot of falling trees on the road, causing the road network is periodically closed in any places where repair shops operate.
It is noted that schools and all educational institutions remain closed throughout Evia.
Giving an overview of Central Greece at this stage, the region’s governor, Fanis Spanos, told K that the biggest problem is the fall of old trees, mostly pines, which often pull down power cables, with consequences.
“This year the snowfall is very intense and the snow on the trees is heavy. We haven’t seen so much snow in a long time. Small businesses have been set up to help and release elderly people with health problems in the most isolated villages where access is difficult. In general, there are problems, but so far they are coping with them, given that the residents are also used to bad weather and are preparing for heating and food until they “hit”.
