Alphabet Inc, the parent company of Google, announced on Monday that it will launch a chatbot service and more artificial intelligence for its search engine as well as for developers, according to Reuters.
The news comes after the public quickly embraced ChatGPT, a rival chatbot from Microsoft-backed OpenAI that produces human-like prose on command and is expected to disrupt how consumers search for information online, a key element of Google’s business.
In a blog post, Alphabet Chief Executive Sundar Pichai said his firm is launching a conversational AI service called Bard to test user feedback, with a public launch in the coming weeks.
He also said that Google plans to add artificial intelligence features to its search engine that will synthesize material for complex queries, such as whether it is easier to learn to play the guitar or the piano.
Pichai said of the chatbot: “Bard aims to combine the breadth of global knowledge with the power, intelligence and creativity of our AI.”
For its part, on Tuesday, Microsoft is holding a press briefing on the progress of its own project with CEO Satya Nadella.
Behind Google Bard is LaMDA, Google’s artificial intelligence that generated text with such skill that one company engineer called it sentient, a claim widely dismissed by the tech giant and academics.
It’s unclear how Google plans to differentiate Bard from ChatGPT. Pichai said the new service is based on information from the Internet; ChatGPT knowledge is updated as of 2021.
In the demo version of the service, Bard, like its competing chatbot, invites users to give it a hint, while warning that its response may be inappropriate or inaccurate.
Google is developing a version of LaMDA that requires less computing power so it can serve more users and improve based on their feedback, Pichai said.
ChatGPT has occasionally turned users away due to explosive growth, with analysts at UBS reporting 57 million unique visitors in December, exceeding potential.
