BMW also just announced an investment of nearly 800 million euros to upgrade its Mexican plant to support the future production of several of its upcoming electric vehicles, and a new high-voltage battery plant is also due to open in northern Mexico.

And BMW doesn’t seem to be the only manufacturer currently interested in Mexico. Indeed, according to the Mexican authorities, Tesla would also participate. According to Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, the American electric car manufacturer may soon announce an opening in Mexico.

“They have confirmed that they are interested in having a presence in Mexico”Marcelo Ebrard told several international journalists. “We are awaiting their decision on the location … it should be soon.” he added during a visit to the Sonora region in the north of the country.

Mexico, the new Eldorado of the electric car?

But why is there such a frenzy around Mexico, and more precisely in the north of the country? The reason is simple and obvious, this region, on the border with the USA, is home to lithium deposits that the country wants to use to make batteries.

In addition, Mexico continues to promote the Sonora Plan, a policy that allows the use of lithium needed to produce batteries for electric vehicles and solar energy.

“We want to invite all the countries of the world, all the companies of the world” to “take part, invest, be part of the future of Mexico” the Mexican foreign minister said before several representatives, including the United States, the European Union, France and Italy.
