The Dacia Sandero has become the second best-selling car in Europe in 2022 with more than 200,000 units sold, in a very special year. From 2008 to 2021, the Volkswagen Golf was the best-selling car in Europe, sometimes far from second place. Well, JATO figures from 30 European countries show that the Peugeot 208 was number one last year.

JATO data includes registrations from 30 European countries, representing 11.3 million new cars in 2022. 206,000 units of the Peugeot 208 were produced, and the French brand returns to the top spot in Europe after 15 years, taking the lead in 2007 with… 207.

In second place was the Dacia Sandero, helped by super-good sales in France, with total European sales of 200,000 units. Volkswagen T-Roc was in third place, Fiat 500 in fourth and VW Golf in only fifth place with 177,000 units (23,000 below Sandero).

Golf fell in price by 14% not only because of the crisis of processors and other components, but also because the Volkswagen concern gave preference to models that were more in demand among the population, cost more and brought more profit. Other brands have also scaled back production of some mass-produced cars in favor of newer, more popular models.

Toyota Yaris, Opel Corsa, Hyundai Tucson, Dacia Duster (149 thousand units) and Renault Clio took 6-10 places in the JATO top. The Ford Puma model produced in Craiova was in 16th place in the European top. Three models produced in Romania are among the top 20 best-selling cars in Europe.

The Tesla Model Y was the best-selling electric model with nearly 140,000 units, while the Tesla Model 3 was second.

The overall market fell 4% to 11.31 million new cars, a far cry from the pre-pandemic level of 15.84 million units.

Kia Sportage increased by 55%, Ford Kuga by 19%, Nissan Qashqai by 11%. In the top 10, Renault Clio fell in price the most: -27%, but Arkana from the French, which found more than 81,000 buyers, did well.

Among the popular models, Volkswagen Polo has become cheaper by 26%, Skoda Octavia by 22%, and Peugeot 2008 by 28%.
