With three projects, Greece is in the race for electrical connections

Central to its relationship Europe With Africa And Middle East for transportation green energy what will replace them fossil fuel claims Hellas by using three investment projects. However, whether it manages to stay in operation will depend on how quickly the final feasibility studies are carried out, which will determine the schedule and the final cost of implementation, since delays favor other alternative projects, such as Foreign Ministry agents report to “K”.. More recently, it was reported that Italy submitted a proposal to Egypt for the joint implementation of an electrical connection for the transmission of 2.5 gigawatts of power with a total cost of 3 billion euros.

Africa’s energy needs are expected to triple by 2040, as nearly half of the population (580 million people) today has no access to electricity. A huge amount of investment in green energy is being coordinated by major international organizations in collaboration with the 55 member states of the African Union, turning Africa into an important player in the global energy market.

OUR Europe looks forward to the huge potential of renewable energy to enter its energy-intensive market through interconnections with its countries North Africa. Spain and Morocco are already connected by power lines, and in 2019 the two countries agreed to build a third.

Tunisia and Algeria are planning a connection that will pass under the Strait of Sicily and reach Italy and Spain. Italy, with a proposal for interconnection with Egypt, entered the “wedge” in the Greek plans, which were among the first designed for the interconnection of Egypt with Europe. The export nature of the projects makes them competitive, and the question of which one will mature faster is a critical issue for their implementation and geopolitical ramifications.

The most mature project is Interface “GREGY – Elica Interconnector” promoted by the Kopelouzo group, with an estimated cost of 3.5 billion euros. The 940 km submarine cable will connect the El Salloum area in Egypt with Nea Makri in Attica, carrying 3 gigawatts of power generated by 9.5 gigawatt solar and wind farms to be built by the Kopelouzou group of companies in Egypt.

The attempts of Italy and Spain to establish a connection with the countries of North Africa strongly compete with the plans of Athens.

The project is included in the Entso-e 10-year Development Plan (TYNDP 2022) and is a candidate for inclusion in the list of projects of common European interest (PCI) and is carried out in close cooperation with the managers of Greece and Egypt.

Her second project Eunice Energy Group provides for a shorter interconnection from the Mersa Matruh area Egypt with Greece at Aterinolackos in Lassithi, Crete, with a cable length of 400 km. The Eunice Power Switch in Greece and Africa (GAP) is designed to transmit 2 gigawatts of power and is also nominated as a project of general interest in the PCI list.

Last week, this project seemed to pick up speed with two steps, signaling or waiting for the support of the US factor. The first was the announcement of the appointment of former Senator Andreas Borgeas as CEO last week. The second message was received just the day before yesterday and concerns Eunice’s strategic cooperation in the field of electrical connection with Egypt with the American company McDermott International from Houston.

Finally, the third electrical interface designed to transmit energy for production in Israel and to Cyprus. This is Interconnector EuroAsia, which recently received funding from European resources in the amount of 657 million euros from the Connecting Europe Fund. The project, with a budget of 2.5 billion euros, concerns the construction of a submarine cable with a transmission capacity of 2,000 MW (1 GW in the first stage) and a total length of about 1,200 kilometers. ADMIE announced its intention to participate in the project in the amount of 25%.

The question of how the energy that will flow through these connections to Greece will reach Europe is a matter for the competent authorities. In this context, a new electrical corridor is being considered that will connect Greece with Austria so that green energy can reach the south of Germany. The connection, with an initial capacity of 3 GW, which will reach 9 GW in the second phase, will start from Greece and reach Albania. From there, ADMIE appears to be considering two alternative routes.
