Israel: 42 arrested after synagogue attack

Forty-two people have been arrested for questioning following the fatal attack that took place yesterday, Friday, outside a synagogue in Vostochny JerusalemThis was announced today by the Israeli police.

Last night, a 21-year-old Palestinian opened fire and killed 7 people outside a synagogue in East Jerusalem during Shabbat prayer before he himself was shot dead by police after a chase.

“The police have detained 42 suspects for questioning, some of whom belong to the family of the terrorist,” the police said in a statement.

He added that other arrested suspects live in the same area as the attacker in East Jerusalem.

In a separate statement, Israeli police said Israeli forces were placed on “high alert.”

The attack took place in Neva Yaakovan area where Israeli settlers live in East Jerusalem.

Kobe Police Chief Saturday he spoke of “one of the worst attacks that has taken place in Israel in recent years.”

After yesterday’s attack, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu he promised “immediate action” without elaborating, and urged Israelis not to take justice into their own hands, but to rely on the army and police.

The Israeli army also announced today that it is beefing up its forces in the occupied West Bank.

“After evaluating the situation AOI (Israel Defense Forces), it was decided to reinforce the Judea and Samaria (West Bank) Division with an additional battalion,” the Israeli military said.

The attack near the synagogue took place the day after the Israeli army raid on Jeninin the northern part of the occupied West Bank, which killed 9 Palestinians.

Lebanese Shia organization Hezbollah today praised the attack on the synagogue in a statement it released.
