Guardian: Santorini underwater volcano fears could trigger tsunami

Of great interest is a new article by The Guardian, which, citing the British geophysicist of the Imperial College Kagetan Krapkevich, claims that the underwater volcano Columbus in Santorini poses a “serious threat”.

According to the publication, “Columbus may have been silent for about 400 years,” but “an underwater volcano near the Greek island of Santorini does not sleep.”

The British newspaper explains that “a previously undiscovered magma chamber is filling up with melt, prompting researchers to recommend observation of the volcano.”

It is noted that the last time Columbus erupted in 1650, when he claimed the lives of 70 people, while the consequences of the explosion are estimated today, according to the publication, much stronger due to population growth and the development of tourism in Santorini.

An article in The Guardian states that the volcano in question is part of “a particularly explosive family of volcanoes that can cause an explosion column tens of kilometers high, with the ability to even cause a tsunami.”

As for the research methodology, the publication says that Krapkiewicz and his team detected a melt concentration about two miles below the volcano “using a new imaging technique similar to medical ultrasound.”

All of the above is analyzed in detail in the journal Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, while the study concludes that an imminent eruption can not be expected immediately, but the volcano poses a serious threat.
