Tsipras: “Gold Rush” is not over yet, institutional measures are needed

The message that “democracy is a daily struggle”, emphasizes the President of SYRIZA, Alexis Tsiprasin his post on today’s International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Regarding the victims of the Holocaust, the leader of the official opposition notes that “the black pages of modern history … unfortunately, did not end with Nazi concentration camps.”

He then refers to the invasion of the Trumpist Capitol and government buildings in Brasilia by Bolsonaros, as well as the Golden Dawn.

“Trump fanatics, Bolsonarians, gold diggers, they change names, but always the same. They invest in poverty and want, they profit from fear, they hate people,” says Mr. Tsipras.

Emphasizing that “democracy is not an acquisition, but a daily struggle”, the head of SYRIZA emphasizes that “we oppose oblivion with memory, humanity, solidarity”.

Especially for the Golden Dawn, he declares that our country has not done away with the Golden Dawn, and calls for institutional measures so that convicted neo-Nazis “never again have the opportunity to poison public life with their intolerance.”

And he concludes: “That’s why today is a day of vigilance. Democratic citizens have their eyes open.”

Full post by Alexis Tsipras:

“Today, on the occasion of the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust and the Day of Remembrance of the Greek Jewish Martyrs and Heroes of the Holocaust, we draw our attention to all the black pages of modern history, which, unfortunately, will not end in Nazi concentration camps.

Those who are nostalgic for the greatest darkness make their way from the American Capitol to the streets of Brasilia and – until recently – to the seats of the Greek Parliament.

Trump fanatics, Bolsonari supporters, gold diggers – they change names, but always remain the same. They invest in poverty and want, they profit from fear, they hate the person.

We counter oblivion with memory, humanity, solidarity. We are indebted to the victims who died in the Nazi concentration camps, we are indebted to the peoples who fight the Beast every day, we are indebted to our people, who in recent years have again realized that democracy is not an acquisition, but a daily struggle.

At a meeting we had shortly before his inauguration, President Lula prophetically told me: “We are done with Bolsonaro, but not with Bolsonaro.”

Accordingly, in our country we have done away with the Golden Dawn, and not with the Golden Dawn, which has many forms and manifestations – with the cover of the most dangerous, with supposedly harmless ones, with those that are tolerable. But we must also take the necessary institutional measures to ensure that convicted neo-Nazi criminals never again have the opportunity to poison public life with their intolerance.

So today is a day of vigilance. Democratic citizens have their eyes open.”
