Only peace and stability are tolerable in the region, the US ambassador to Athens said in connection with the atmosphere of tension prevailing in relations with Turkey. George Tsunis.
Asked what the Greeks can expect from the US if Erdogan makes good on his threats, Mr Tsunis replied: “The US has a huge interest in the region and will work for peace and stability. Everything else is unacceptable. End of story.”
At the same time, in his statements to MEGA, he clarified that the United States is striving to avoid conflict, and stated that the American president understands and loves Greece and wants stability in the region.
“The US understands the situation, and if we are called, we will be very helpful and ready to avoid conflict. We urge both of our allies to refrain from any action or any situation that could lead to an accident. President Biden knows the area. He worked with both leaders. He has known President Erdogan for decades. They understand each other very well. I will also tell you that President Biden understands and loves Greece and wants peace and stability in the region,” he said.
The American ambassador insisted on the need for dialogue with mutual respect so as not to create misunderstandings, while pointedly noting that a diplomat often cannot speak the same language in public.
The two countries have capable diplomats and can talk to ease tensions, he said.
However, he stressed that everyone is disappointed with Turkey’s rhetoric. That is why, he added, dialogue is needed to change the paradigm and stop the confrontational rhetoric.
“At this time, everyone should be cool. This is not a watch to raise our voices,” he advised.
