The massive movement of people during the current Chinese New Year holiday season could lead to the spread of the pandemic, an increase in cases in some areas, but a second wave of Covid is unlikely in the short term, said Wu Zunyu, chief epidemiologist at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. .
Nearly 60,000 people with Covid have died in hospitals since Jan. 12, about a month after China abruptly ended its zero Covid policy, according to government figures.
However, experts say this number does not fully reflect reality because it does not include those dying at home, and because many doctors have said they are discouraged from listing Covid as the cause of death.
