The No. 18 seed in Melbourne, Khachanov got off to a great start and won the first 14 games (leading 6-0, 6-0, 2-0).
The Japanese Nishioka tried to fight back, but also lost the third set on a tie-break (7-4).
Karen, who dropped just two points in the second set, will play the winner of the match between Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz (11 ATP/10 favourite) and American Sebastian Korda (31 ATP/29) in the quarters.
