Former German player and coach Rudy Waller has become the new sporting director of the German national team, replacing Oliver Bierhoff, the FA in Frankfurt said in a statement.
Rudy Waller returns to the German national team
Bierhoff has so far been the only one to resign following Germany’s failure at the World Cup in Qatar, where the team failed to make it past the group stage, ESPN writes.
Coach Hansi Flick remains focused on restoring the confidence of the fans for the 2024 European Championship, which will be hosted by Germany itself.
“Rudi is an important part of German football. He pleased the fans as a player, coach and manager. Due to the experience of working in the national team and many years of work at Bayer Leverkusen, he is suitable for this position,” announced Flick.
Rudy Waller made 90 appearances for the national team, scoring 47 goals and winning the 1990 World Cup. As a coach, he coached the Germans from 2000 to 2004, reaching the 2002 World Cup final.
