Pavlyuchenkova, who is ranked 364th in the world (she has played only six matches in 2022 due to a knee injury), lost to the Italian 6-0, 6-1 in just 55 minutes of play.

Giorgi (70 WTA) will play Anna Karolina Schmidlova (105 WTA, out of qualification) in the next round after the Slovakian edged Italy’s Martina Trevisan (21st seed) 6-3, 6-2 . .

Pavlyuchenkova had a superb season in 2021, reaching her first Grand Slam final in Paris, winning Olympic mixed doubles gold in Tokyo with Andrei Rublev and leading Russia to its first title since 2008 at the Billie Jean King Cup.

Australian Open 2023 will be held from January 16 to 29. The champions of the title were Ashley Barty (now retired from sports) and Rafael Nadal.
