PSD President Marcel Cholaku said on Friday that labor taxation must be reduced and capital tax increased to return to “social justice”, according to Agerpres.

“Social justice is our goal, not the goal of justice. That doesn’t mean we’re going with higher taxes, it means we’re going to have to lower taxes on labor and we’re going to have to increase taxes on capital. We’re going to have to be very clear about these things and create levers that will help us bridge the gap between the bottom blanket and the top blanket. If we continue without socially just policies, then at some point we will return to a social crisis. (…) There is no such thing as having extraordinary incomes and the state not taxing them as long as you have these additional incomes. You can’t benefit from money from the state because it’s a pandemic and you can have extraordinary incomes and no one is taxing you. You can’t win an energy crisis from all of us, and no one will tax you. We need to clarify these things. This is not additional taxes, this is social justice that we must establish and explain very well to Romanians. If we, the Social Democratic Party and the largest party in Romania, don’t do it, no one else will,” Colacu said on Friday in Zaleu.

He also noted that large-scale investments are needed, and agricultural producers and construction companies need to be helped through state aid schemes.

“It is necessary to admit that we need significant investments, with the largest food trade deficit in two years of the right-wing government, Romania is one of the largest producers of agricultural products. Government aid schemes for manufacturers must be devised to increase their capacity so that they no longer need to import so much. We need to come to construction companies with aid schemes to produce their construction materials in Romania, half of the construction materials used at the moment, from highways to kindergarten repairs, are imported. We must help the Romanian capital,” said Colacu.
