The Venezuelan opposition officially put an end to the “presidency” and “provisional government” of Juan Guaido and elected another leader of its parallel parliament on Thursday, News.ro reported with reference to AFP.
The parallel opposition parliament, elected in 2015, whose members defend continuity and do not recognize legislative elections in 2020 won by allies of President Nicolas Maduro, met virtually and will be led by Dinora Figueroa, who lives in exile in Spain.
She succeeded Juan Guaido, the former president of the parliament.
Two other deputies “in exile” – Marianela Fernandez and Auristela Vasquez – became part of the new leadership of the opposition parliament.
On December 30, the three opposition parties approved the abolition of the “interim government” they had supported during its creation.
Juan Guaido, who declared himself Venezuela’s interim president in January 2019, has failed to oust President Nicolás Maduro from power despite widespread international support.
This support gradually disappeared because it seemed useless.
Juan Guaido and his allies consider the suspension of the president and interim government an “unconstitutional mistake” that creates a “vacuum.”
“The dictatorship cannot be the one to occupy this vacuum,” Juan Guaido stressed on Thursday.
The end of the “interim period” intervenes in the context of deep divisions among the opposition, and the 2024 presidential election approaches.
Primary elections to nominate a single candidate are to be held this year.
According to many observers, Juan Guaido can claim this position in the primary elections.
The official parliament, which won the elections boycotted by the opposition and not recognized by the international community, met, in turn, in the seat of the Assembly in Caracas, and elected Jorge Rodríguez as president.
“This is the hour of complete victory. You are elected members of the Venezuelan parliament,” thundered Jorge Rodríguez in his speech as the new president of the legislature.
He is leading the delegation of power in the ongoing talks with the opposition in Mexico, trying to lead Venezuela out of the economic and political crisis it has been facing, according to News.ro.
