In November, Amazon announced the layoffs, which were then expected to be more than 10,000 people, but the company has now reported a more accurate number of about 18,000 people. That’s the biggest number announced by a tech company in months, but it’s also Amazon’s largest by employee count.

The information was revealed by the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday night, and soon after, Amazon CEO Andy Jesse confirmed it in a post, explaining that Amazon has also experienced tough times in the past and that it will overcome them this time as well.

The 18,000 job cuts will also affect operations in Europe. Amazon has 1.5 million employees worldwide.

Like other big tech companies, Amazon has grown significantly during the pandemic, especially in the cloud services and e-commerce sectors. In just two years, Amazon has grown as much as it has in nearly a decade, doubling its logistics network and increasing its workforce by several hundred thousand. It was too fast growth.

Towards the end of the pandemic, many people returned to brick-and-mortar stores, and Amazon had to implement a cost-cutting plan.

Amazon’s market cap is $870 billion, a far cry from its November 2021 peak of $1.8 trillion.

In the fall of 2011, Meta announced that it would lay off 11,000 people, and many large companies announced layoffs in the thousands.
