Writer, playwright, screenwriter and academic Dumitru Radu Popescu died at the age of 87, News.ro reports.

He enriched us with a monumental work of exceptional value: prose, theater, poetry, literary criticism. He lived his life in complete integrity. He was a colleague and friend beyond reproach. The pain is too great and the words too poor to dare now, and in this place, a well-deserved remembrance. May God rest him in peace and rest in peace , which he was deprived of for so long,” wrote Radu F. Oleksandr on Facebook.

“I had the honor to meet him as the director of the publishing house of the Romanian Academy. In this position, he promoted culture and science at the highest level, marking all the activities of the institution with his intellectual attitude. I remain grateful to him for his support in editing the second edition of the Treatise on Surgery, as well as other specialized works. May God rest in peace!” – said Professor Dr. Irinel Popescu.

Dumitru Radu Popescu was born on August 18, 1935 in Bihor County. He attended high school in Oradea, and in 1953 he became a medical student in Cluj-Napoca, which he left in his third year to become a proofreader in the magazine “Steaua din Cluj”. In parallel with Dumitru Radu Popescu, he entered the Faculty of Philology at the University of Cluj-Napoca, graduating in 1961.

In 1970, the writer was awarded the prize of the Romanian Academy. He received the Romanian Writers’ Union award in 1964, 1969, 1974, 1977 and 1980.

The most famous plays written by D. R. Popescu: “Bird Shakespeare”, “These sad angels” and “Gnome from the summer garden”. Wrote novels: “F” (1969), “The royal hunt” (1973), “Cei doi din dregt Thebes” (1973), “A beer for my horse” (1974), “Ploile de dincollo de vreme” (1976 ) and “King of the Clouds” (1976).

One of the best screenwriters, Dumitru Radu Popescu, signed: “Smile in the Midsummer” (1964); “Saturday Evening Ball” (1968), in collaboration with Geo Saizescu; “Too Small for a War This Big” (1970); “Păcală” (1974) – in collaboration with Geo Saizescu; “Gentle Anastasia passed by” (1980); White Lace Dress (1989), directed by Dan Pizza; “Triangle of Death” (1999) – dialogues, in collaboration with Sergiu Nicolaescu.

In 1969 – 1989, he was a deputy member of the Central Committee of the PKR, and from 1975 – a deputy in the Grand National Assembly. In 1982-1990, he was the president of the Union of Writers, and since 2006 – the general director of the Romanian Academy. publishing house and deputy chairman of the Scientific Editorial Board.
