The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCR) noted that the current losses of Ukrainians are “much higher”, but it is difficult to obtain reliable data from the frontline areas.

From February 24, when Moscow launched a large-scale invasion, to December 26, the country recorded 17,831 civilian casualties: 6,884 dead and 10,947 wounded.

Among the dead were 429 children, according to the UN agency’s statement released on Tuesday evening.

“The majority of recorded civilian casualties were recorded as a result of the use of wide-range explosive weapons, including heavy artillery fire, salvo fire systems, missile strikes and airstrikes,” the statement said.

Donbas, which includes the eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, was the most affected.

Earlier, the UN said that Russian troops indiscriminately bombarded populated areas, killing civilians and destroying hospitals, schools and other civilian infrastructure. In recent months, Moscow has targeted energy and water infrastructure.
