
The Iranian chess player took part in the World Championship without a hijab, Iranian media reported. This is the latest example of an Iranian athlete who appeared at competitions with her head uncovered after the start of anti-government demonstrations in the country, News.ro reports.

Iranian websites Khabarvarzeshi and Etemad note that Sarah Khadem participated in the World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship in Almaty, Kazakhstan, without wearing a hijab. Both sites posted pictures of the chess player with his head uncovered.
Khadem, born in 1997, is ranked 804th in the world.
Iran has been the scene of widespread protests since mid-September, when a 22-year-old woman, Mahsa Amini, died after being detained by morality police for wearing inappropriate clothing.
