Mountain rescuers and border police resumed search operations in the Maramures Mountains (altitude 1,800 meters) for four Ukrainian citizens out of six who tried to reach Romania by crossing the Alpine border, the Territorial spokesman said on Sunday. “The search for four Ukrainian citizens is being resumed. (…) According to the information we currently have, the group split up: three went to the foot of the mountain, to the territory of Romania, and the fourth could not move.” , remained waiting for rescue teams. According to him, five Border Police officers have joined the search team, which also includes Salvamont Maramures County Public Service Officers.

ITPF spokesman Sighetu Marmaţiei reiterated that the weather conditions on the mountain are difficult, with rain and fog prevailing, making the search difficult.

The director of Salvamont Maramureş, Dan Benga, said that the search team is going to extract and evacuate the first injured person whose coordinates are available.

“He is alive. Hypothermic, but conscious, and we managed to contact him this morning. Finally he decided to listen to us and give us his location. He was careful about the location, which made our search extremely difficult. (…) There are three others whose whereabouts we do not know because they have no phone signal, and one of them is also injured,” Dan Benga said.

Salvamont Maramures and border police were alerted on Saturday that several Ukrainian citizens who were trying to reach Romania by crossing the Maramures mountains got lost due to difficult weather conditions. On the night from Saturday to Sunday, two citizens of Ukraine in a state of hypothermic shock recovered, they are being provided with medical assistance.
