The conservative press of the USA commented negatively on the historic visit of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi, including comparing him to the manager of a strip club.
Fox News, America’s leading conservative TV channel, runs the headline: “Zelensky goes straight to GOP critics, says no country will be safe if Ukraine falls.”
In this article, which largely paraphrases Zelensky’s speech to Congress in Washington, Fox News notes that “some Republican lawmakers, particularly in the House of Representatives, have criticized sending more money to Ukraine.”
“They argued that sending more aid without implementing accountability measures or a plan to end the war is inappropriate,” Fox News wrote.
In this sense, American television quotes Congressman Thomas Massey from Kentucky, who stated that “the majority of my constituents do not want their money to go to Ukraine, especially without control or audit.”
Fox News also quoted Republican Congresswoman Mary Miller of Illinois as saying, “I will oppose giving more money to Ukraine as long as our southern border remains open to invasion by drug cartels.”
On Fox News, Volodymyr Zelensky was compared to the manager of a strip club
On his show following Zelenskyi’s visit to the White House and his speech to Congress, Tucker Carlson, Fox News’ most popular host, begins his monologue by telling his audience that:
“As far as we know, no one has ever addressed the United States Congress wearing a sweater before, but they (US lawmakers) love it. Much more than I love you.”
Carlson then compares Zelensky to Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder and former CEO of trading platform FTX, who was arrested in the Bahamas on fraud charges after the company spectacularly collapsed.
“Remember when Sam Bankman-Fried showed up in Washington wearing a t-shirt and talking gibberish and all the self-proclaimed geniuses hailed him as a hero? The media, Congress, the White House, they all loved this weird little guy named Sam Bankman-Fried. Do you still remember that?” Carlson rhetorically asks the audience.
“For some reason, we were reminded of this today, when the president of Ukraine arrived at the White House dressed as a strip club manager and began demanding money,” he added at the beginning of the 7-minute monologue.
The conservative American press does not take kindly to military aid to Ukraine
The Federalist, one of the most well-known conservative websites in the United States, gives the unequivocal headline “See what’s wrong with Congress’ plan to give Zelensky cash for Christmas” in a long article in which it tries to break down the case for Ukraine aid point by point.
What the Federalist says:
- Americans simply disagree;
- throwing money into Ukraine contributes to the escalation of the war, not its end;
- money for Ukraine is taken from the funds needed for US expenses;
- funding a war abroad when Americans struggle to afford the basics is the wrong choice;
- the handout given to Zelenskyi is part of a destructive spending package;
- there are more important issues of foreign policy than Ukraine;
- Ukraine is not the main priority of US strategic security interests;
- the Biden administration’s failure to properly manage the issues;
- Ukraine is not the most honest country.
Another conservative site, Townhall, which is considered close to the Tea Party movement, writes that “Zelensky tells Congress that US aid is not enough yet.”
Townhall journalists, in turn, quote several Republican congressmen who oppose military aid to Ukraine, also noting that “Zelenskyi’s arrival at [Washington] DC coincides with another military aid gift from the Biden administration, a cool $1.85 billion that includes a battery of Patriot missile defenses.”
“An additional $45,000,000,000 is to be transferred to Ukraine as part of the Democrats’ $1.7 trillion spending bill,” Townhall notes.
“The question everyone should be asking is why the US is investing so much money and effort to help Ukraine when America is facing some of the biggest challenges in its history,” the article noted.
Not all conservative media in the US oppose aid to Ukraine
The discordant note in the speech by US conservative media appears to be struck by the National Review, a magazine founded by intellectual and author William Buckley Jr., noting that “Zelensky takes aim at isolationism in his speech to Congress, saying the world is ‘too interconnected.’ to appease Russian aggression.”
“The wartime leader’s arrival comes at a crucial moment in America’s domestic politics: The Senate is on the verge of passing a spending package that includes nearly $45 billion in civilian and military aid to Ukraine,” National Review noted.
Journalists of this publication recall that the package “received unanimous support from the leadership of Democrats and Republicans in the Senate”, saying that only a “vocal minority” of Republicans in the House of Representatives, the lower house of the legislature in Washington, “called on urging their colleagues to review the scope of the aid, offered to Ukraine”.
The National Review also notes that Zelenskyi said in his speech that Russian President Vladimir Putin has benefited from weapons provided by Iran, a regime hostile to the US, and that other states could follow Moscow’s lead if Russia successfully violates international law. .
Other conservative sites, such as RedState or TheBlaze, a media outlet founded by former Fox News host Glenn Beck, seem to have completely ignored Zelenskyi’s visit to Washington, not having a single article on the topic.
