The Senate approved a $1.7 trillion government funding bill on Thursday, sending the legislation to the House of Representatives, where it will be passed by a Friday night deadline to avoid a partial shutdown of the federal government. News.ro refers to CNBC.

The 4,155-page bill would provide $772.5 billion for non-defense discretionary programs and $858 billion for defense, according to a summary released earlier this week by Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Sen. Patrick Leahy.

The figures represent an increase in non-defense spending of about 5 percent and an 8 percent increase in defense spending and Pentagon programs.

The legislative package also includes $44.9 billion in military, humanitarian and economic aid to Ukraine.

The total includes funds to replenish the Pentagon’s weapons stockpile sent by the US to Ukraine, as well as additional aid to NATO allies.

The vote in the Senate took place a day after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy came to Washington and delivered a historic speech at a special joint session of Congress.

Dressed in military uniform and boots, he urged lawmakers to continue funding his country’s “war of independence” against invading Russian forces.

In addition to aid to Ukraine, the measure provides $40 billion in new funding to states and tribal reservations to help communities across the country recover from natural disasters such as wildfires and severe storms.

He is also reviewing the Federal Election Act, an 1887 law that former President Donald Trump and his allies tried to use to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, which Trump lost.
