For many years, the Volkswagen Golf was the best-seller in the European market. The German compact car really dominates the ranking, having a real success in all countries of the Old Continent, thanks to, among other things, a very consensual design and a wide choice of engines. But the Wolfsburg star still has a rival in his clutches. And it is French, because it is a Peugeot 208. A city car is not inferior to a compact car, and sometimes even surpasses it. That’s exactly what happened again in October, when the 208 beat the Golf in terms of sales. Cock-a-doodle Doo!

A small difference
But if in this way the city car is very popular among European buyers, the gap with its competitor is still small. In fact, 17,075 units out of 208 were sold throughout October, compared to 17,038 units for Golf. Therefore, there is very little difference between the two, as shown by Jato Dynamics, which specializes in data from the automotive industry. From my side, Dacia Sandero occupies the third step of the pedestal, followed by Fiat 500 and Toyota Yaris. The difference between them is also quite small, although all exceeded 16,000 copies sold.
And electric?
According to Jato, the Peugeot 208 is also the best-selling car in Europe in the first 10 months of the year. Very good news for a city car that was nevertheless beaten up a few weeks ago Volkswagen T-Roc, which then took first place in the rating. And then what about electricity? Well, they’re still behind, as the Volkswagen ID.4, October’s bestseller, only managed 6,069 sales. This is very small compared to the stars of the market combined.
