Founder of street newspaper Britannia Big problem my lord John Birdsaid that there are a million people in the country, if not more, who are at risk of falling into poverty and becoming homeless because they cannot pay rent or pay off mortgages.
“And this is by far the most disturbing thing I’ve ever seen since the early days of Big Trouble,” he told Times Radio.
Asked if he thinks the threat of homelessness for many families is worse than it has been, the Lord Bird he replied: “Yes, that is, historically we have not seen such a situation and I don’t want to sound like an old man, but maybe what I live in Cambridge this got me thinking about history but i think we need to take a look at the Glades highlands or even the Fences that drove thousands and thousands of people into the cities. Absolutely unhappy. Nowhere to stay and find work only in the mills. I don’t think there was such a period in history, maybe at the end of the Napoleonic wars, when people walked helplessly through the streets. After World War I, there were many displaced people. After the Second World War, there was help, but we did not have such a situation. This is historical. And I think this government should step down and stop planning only for the medium term,” said the founder of Big Issue.
