Argentina won the FIFA World Cup after a dramatic final with France, the draw was decided on penalties (2-2 after 90 minutes, 3-3 after 120 minutes, 4-2 on penalties for the Argentines).
Lionel Messi and Co. brought home the World Cup trophy after a 36-year gap, the last to do so was the late Diego Armando Maradona (in 1986).
The Cougars arrived home Monday night (02:21 a.m. local time), and even at that late hour, fans were waiting for them at the airport.
As expected, after landing in Buenos Aires, Lionel Messi was the first to leave the plane, holding the World Cup trophy.
The Argentinian government has sanctioned a large “popular assembly” with over a million people expected (as it did immediately after Messi and company’s victory over France).
But according to Argentine officials, a big celebration with fans will take place on Tuesday.
On this occasion, Argentina declared a holiday, until 12:00 local time, only government institutions and banks work.
The central place of entertainment will be the Obelisk in Buenos Aires.
During its participation in the World Cup, Argentina managed to become the champion three times: in 1978, 1986 and 2022.
