“Everything is fine,” former arms dealer Viktor Bout told his family on the phone after he landed in Russia on Thursday, according to a short clip broadcast by Russia’s Rossiya 24 television channel.
“I love you so much,” he told his emotional mother, Raisa Booth. Bout, 55, was previously released in a prisoner swap between Russia and the United States amid tensions between the two countries over the conflict in Ukraine, AFP reported.
Russia’s foreign ministry announced Thursday that it had released American basketball player Brittney Griner to receive Russian Viktor Bout in a prisoner exchange.
The exchange between Viktor Bout and Griner took place on Thursday at the Abu Dhabi airport, according to Russian news agencies.
US President Joe Biden announced that Griner, who has been held in Russia since February, is now “safe” and “on her way” to the United States.
“I was on the phone with Brittney Griner a few minutes ago. She is safe. She is on the plane. She is on her way to the USA,” the US president wrote on Twitter.
