Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed shock on Tuesday and promised to review a contract with a Chinese-linked company to supply and maintain radio equipment for Canada’s federal police, AFP reported.
According to CBC reports, in October 2021, a contract worth half a million Canadian dollars for a Canadian police ground radio security system was awarded to Sinclair Technologies, a company based in Canada but controlled by China’s Hytera Communications since 2017.
Hytera Communications is partly owned by the Chinese government and sales of its products are banned in the US, raising concerns in Canada about China’s potential access to Canadian police communications amid tensions between the two countries.
“I find it troubling,” Justin Trudeau said at a press conference on the sidelines of the China-led U.N. Biodiversity Summit, which was held in Montreal because of Beijing’s policy of zero response to COVID-19.
Canadian security services have warned of “foreign interference in our institutions and structures,” Trudeau said.
That doesn’t stop Canadian officials from “signing contracts with questionable levels of security for our operations and for the national security of our institutions, such as the Canadian federal police,” he continued.
“We will deal with this problem,” insisted Canada’s prime minister, promising to ensure the security of communication technologies used by the government and its agencies.
