The Qatari authorities have released an activist who stormed the match between Portugal and Uruguay. Mario Ferri took the field 51st minute of the match and was subsequently arrested.
The activist was waving an LGBTI flag and was also wearing a T-shirt with the Superman logo. “Save Ukraine” was written on the front side, and “Respect for the women of Iran” on the reverse side.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, together with the Italian Embassy in Doha, followed this case after the invasion of the stadium,” the Italian Foreign Ministry said in a statement sent to the AFP news agency. “After a short detention, Feri was released by the authorities without further consequences,” the department said, without specifying where he was being held.
The Italian activist is famous. He has organized similar protests in the past, including at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, where he raised the issue of children living in poverty.
