The General Secretariat for Civil Protection of the Ministry of Climate Crises and Civil Protection issued recommendations for a new wave of bad weather called “Ariel”.

In accordance with Emergency Hazardous Weather Bulletin which was released today Tuesday, November 29, 2022 from National Weather Service (NWS), Severe Weather System called “ARIEL”. due to low atmospheric pressure in the south of Italy, moving from east to northeast and is predicted to cause worse weather with main characteristics locally high rainfall height, high rainfall, high frequency of lightning in coastal areas and stormy southerly winds of 7 to 8 on the Beaufort scale.

Bad weather will continue from tonight (Tuesday, 29-11-2022) to Thursday evening (01-12-2022).

A. From Tuesday night (29-11-2022) to Thursday afternoon (01-12-2022), heavy rains and storms will occur in the south of the Ionian Sea, in the west and south of the Peloponnese and in west of Crete.

B a) From Wednesday morning (30-12-2022) to Thursday noon (01-12-2022) northern Ionian, western Sterea, Epirus, Crete (mainly western and southern), and gradually the rest of the Peloponnese, eastern Sterea (including Attica ), central Macedonia, Thessaly, Cyclades, Evia and Sporades.

b) From Wednesday afternoon (30-12-2022) until Thursday evening (01-12-2022), Eastern Macedonia, the islands of the northern and eastern Aegean and the Dodecanese will be affected. From Thursday afternoon (01-12-2022) until evening Thrace will also be affected.

C. From Thursday afternoon (01-11-2022) strong events will show a gradual weakening in most areas, but they will continue to affect the islands of the Eastern Aegean and the Dodecanese with heavy rains and storms until the evening.

At the same time, the General Secretariat for Civil Protection recommends that citizens take extra care to protect themselves from the risks posed by severe weather events.

Particularly in areas where Heavy rain, thunderstorms or gusty winds are expected:

  • To secure objects that, if blown away by severe weather conditions, could cause damage or injury.
  • Make sure the gutters and downspouts of the houses are clear and working properly.
  • Avoid crossing streams and streams on foot or by car during storms and rains, and for several hours after they end.
  • Avoid working outdoors and operating in sea and coastal areas during adverse weather conditions (danger of lightning strikes).
  • Take cover immediately during hail. Take shelter in a building or car and do not leave the safe area until they are sure the storm has passed. Hail can be very dangerous for animals too.
  • Avoid walking under large trees, under posted signs, and in public areas where light objects (eg pots, broken glass, etc.) can break off and fall to the ground (eg under balconies).
  • Conscientiously follow the instructions of local authorities such as the Road Traffic Authority, etc.

Also in areas with intense thunderstorm activity:

  • Do not hold on to electrical appliances or the telephone, as lightning can pass through the wires. Disconnect TVs from antenna and power supply.
  • Do not touch plumbing pipes (kitchen, bathroom) as they are good conductors of electricity.
  • Park it on the side of the road and away from trees that might fall on it.
  • Stay inside and turn on your brake lights (emergency lights) until the storm subsides.
  • Close windows and do not touch metal objects.
  • Avoid flooded roads.
  • Take cover in a building or car, or immediately sit on the ground without lying down.
  • If you are in a forest, take cover under the hard branches of low trees.
  • Never take cover under a tall tree in an open area.
  • Avoid lowlands due to the risk of flooding.
  • Stay away from power poles, power lines, telephone lines, and fences.
  • Stay away from metal objects (eg cars, bicycles, camping equipment, etc.).
  • Stay away from rivers, lakes and other bodies of water.
  • If you are at sea, leave immediately.
  • If you are isolated on a flat surface and feel like your hair is standing on end (signaling that lightning is about to strike), sit deep with your head between your legs (to minimize body surface area and contact with the ground), dropping metal objects, which you have.

Bad weather announcement to and from the region of Crete

A severe weather warning has also been issued by the Civil Protection of the Crete Region, stating that according to the A.A. 16/2022/29-11-2022/12:00 B EMY/EMK the arrival of the weather system called “ARIEL” is predicted with the main characteristics of high rainfall heights, locally high speeds, high frequency of lightning and stormy southerly winds of 7 -8 on the Beaufort scale , which will mainly affect western and southern Crete from the night hours tonight, Tuesday 29 November 2022.

According to the announcement, all services and technical means of the Crete region, which are part of the civil protection mechanism, have been put on high alert in accordance with the provisions of the operational plan. In addition, citizens are reminded to take extra care in areas where severe weather events occur.
