The full letter of the head of the DSZ:
- “I would like to thank you very much for your letter and I would like to express my gratitude for your valuable presence at the PES congress in Berlin. The event was very successful and demonstrated the strength and unity of our social democratic family, especially in this extremely turbulent period and the many challenges we face both in the European Union and internationally.
- As you know, PES and our progressive family held discussions regarding the continuation of the accession of Bulgaria and Romania to Schengen. Our strong commitment to this cause remains unchanged, and the resolution passed by PES in Congress is a strong signal of our political position on this issue. As I mentioned in my speech in Berlin, I personally support the accession of Bulgaria and Romania to the Schengen area.
- I am extremely pleased that the European Commission has finally asked Bulgaria, Croatia and Romania to join the Schengen area. Thanks to the efforts of progressive European Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson, we welcome this much-needed step and hope that the accession of these three countries will strengthen the European Union as a whole without further delay. Socialists and Democrats will continue to support this process.
- I hope that we can continue to count on the support and contribution of you and your party in achieving our common goals. PES will organize a preparatory meeting before EUCO on December 15, which we hope you will be able to attend.
It will be recalled that on October 15, the European Socialists (PES) voted at the congress held in Berlin for a resolution on firm support for Romania’s accession to the Schengen zone.
