The Canadian government announced a new round of sanctions against Belarusian officials on Tuesday as exiled opposition leader Svitlana Tikhanovskaya visited the country to urge Ottawa to keep up pressure on Alexander Lukashenko’s regime, AFP reported.
The sanctions target 22 regime officials and 15 companies associated with “military production, technology, engineering, banking and rail transport.” In total, more than 100 individuals and companies of the country have come under the sanctions of Canada.
“We know that human rights are being violated in Belarus, and we also know that Belarus is involved in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine,” Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Jolie said together with Tikhanovskaya at a press briefing.
Canada wants to “do more to really isolate Belarus diplomatically, politically and economically,” she added.
In his statement, Jolie accused the Belarusian president’s regime of allowing “its territory to be used as a launching pad for Russia’s heinous attacks on Ukraine.”
In an interview with journalists on Monday, Svitlana Tikhanovskaya’s political opponent said that she plans to ask Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to “introduce clearer sanctions” against officials of Alexander Lukashenko’s regime.
“Today, the very existence of Belarus is under threat,” she said.
She also warned that she would seek more aid for Belarusian civil society, including independent journalists, as well as some 1,400 political prisoners and their families.
Svitlana Tikhanovskaya lives in exile after fleeing abroad in the face of brutal repression by Oleksandr Lukashenko, who claimed victory in the 2020 elections, which the West considered “stolen”.
