One of the most interesting matches at the start of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar is between the African champion Senegal and one of the strongest teams in Europe, the Netherlands.

Senegal won both the Africa Cup of Nations final and World Cup qualification after two games against Egypt, both on penalties.

Coach Aliou Cisse cannot rely on Bayern Munich star Sadio Mane, who is still recovering from injury, as the striker could miss the final tournament.

Despite being one of the best teams in Africa and having been a finalist in the last two continental tournaments (0-1 with Algeria in 2019 and 4-2 on penalties with Egypt in 2021), Senegal are making only their third appearance at the World Cup.

However, Aliou Cisse led the team to two consecutive World Cup qualifiers, after Russia (2918), where the African team was eliminated from the group stage.

Senegal had not played a friendly before the Qatar competition, with their last matches coming in September, a 2-0 draw with Bolivia and a 1-1 draw with Iran.

The Netherlands entered the World Cup in Qatar without emotion, winning a group with Turkey, Norway, Montenegro, Latvia and Gibraltar, and even scored the top scorer of the previous match, Memphis Depay (12 goals, as well as England’s Harry Kane).

Coach Louis van Gaal (71) is in his third term in charge of the Clockwork Orange after 2000-2001 and 2012-2014, and during his career he has also coached huge teams such as Ajax Amsterdam, FC Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester United.

Opting not to play any friendlies before the finals, the Netherlands return to the World Cup eight years after missing out on the finals in Russia (2018) for the first time in 16 years.

Senegal and the Netherlands have never met before and will be rivals for the first time even at the World Cup.
