Elections: adjusting strategy for SI and SYRIZA

A new political environment, significantly different from what it was a few months ago, is taking shape as the country enters the last leg of its journey to elections. The phone surveillance case caused a change in the strategy of the political parties and brought new data to the fore. Although for New Democracy and the government’s top position in the polls has not been challenged by any measure, it is a fact that the pressure to keep the wiretapping issue in the news increases mobility in the ruling party. The initial impression that the case would close and be closed, leave the spotlight with the completion of the work of the parliamentary commission of inquiry, was not confirmed, as it repeatedly returned and even dynamically found itself in the spotlight. . And the political system as a whole adjusts the strategy and narrative with which each party will go to the elections.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, in his speech yesterday at the meeting of the Political Committee of the ND, clearly indicated the path along which the party will move. With a constant introduction and reminder of the government’s actions from the 2019 elections until today. With a reminder of the crises he has handled and what he has accomplished. The links are clear: to national issues, to defense deals, to the economy, to jobs, to raise incomes, to eliminate taxes, to overcome the energy crisis, to extract natural gas, to reduce unpaid pensions. Mr. Mitsotakis invited party leaders for a constant and constant reminder of what the government has achieved. The choice of ND is obvious. “Answer” to the opposition’s attempt to leave the topic of wiretapping almost single in the news by projecting what happened and inviting citizens to compare the four-year sentences of Mitsotakis and Tsipras. And that’s because, as Mr. Mitsotakis said, “a citizen can distinguish good government that also makes mistakes from really bad government.” The message is simple: if a mistake was made, it does not undo what has been done since 2019, and we will be sure to constantly remind them of this.

On the contrary, his choice is just as obvious Alexis Tsipras and his SYRIZA press the government as much as possible, using the problem of wiretapping as a “remedy”. For the main opposition party, this issue is also a kind of opposition exit, since the government managed to get out of managing a series of crises of the previous period without serious losses. If the official opposition fails, as opinion polls consistently show, reap the rewards or formulate a compelling reason for the government’s alternative proposal. Thus, the surveillance case was seen by SYRIZA as a privileged area in which it could put pressure on the government and score points. The problem also lies in the withdrawal from the internal party front and the introversion that SYRIZA faced, since in the previous period there were serious objections about how the party should have been politicized. A group of leaders makes a clear shift towards the middle class, wanting to attract voters from there, and leaders react by talking about “Mr. Pantelis.” The problem of wiretapping is united front.

A special case is PASOKas chairman of the party Nikos Androulakisbecame a victim of surveillance. At Harilaou Trikoupis, they consistently choose to cover Mr. Androulakis’ institutional activities in an attempt to justify themselves while maintaining a safe distance from SYRIZA, making it clear that they would not want to be identified with Koumunduru.
